Als sich im Jahr 1982 vier langhaarige Metal-Maniacs in Frankfurt am Main dazu entschlossen haben, eine Band namens TANKARD (Englisch für Bierkrug) zu gründen, ahnte wohl keiner der Beteiligten, dass es die Gruppe über drei Jahrzehnte später immer noch geben wird. Geschweige denn, dass die Band sich zur Speerspitze des deutsche Thrash Metal mausern würde. Doch es gibt sie noch! Und das ohne Unterbrechung. Im Zeitalter zahlloser „Reunion“-Phantome, die mal kurz aus der Gruft schießen, die Hand aufhalten um dann wieder zu Staub zerfallen, hielten TANKARD unerbittlich die Flagge des Thrash-Metal nach oben: eine respektable Leistung! NOT ONE DAY DEAD!

Und so feiern die Erfinder der sinnbefreiten Stilrichtung „Alcoholic Metal“ im Jahr 2017 mit ihrem siebzehnten Studioalbum „One Foot In The Grave“ ein beinahe unglaubliches Jubelfest: Wir erheben unsere Humpen auf 35 Jahre TANKARD.

Jedoch ist es längst nicht mehr so, wie der „Stern“ 1988 in einem größeren Feature über die „Subkultur Heavy Metal“ schrieb: „Ihre Musik klingt, als würde ein vollbeladener Zug mit Bierkrügen entgleisen.“ Denn trotz allem Humor, darf man TANKARD auf musikalischer Ebene keineswegs unterschätzen. Die Band brachte kontinuierlich starke Alben auf den Markt und hat sich nicht zuletzt mit Alltime-Classcis wie „Empty Tankard“, „The Morning After“ oder „Chemical Invasion“ den Status „Kultband“ mehr als verdient. Ausverkaufte Clubshows, Tourneen in Südamerika oder Asien, Auftritte auf den größten Metal-Festivals der Welt (WACKEN, HELLFEST, GRASPOP, SUMMER BREEZE…) sowie die jüngsten Charterfolge zeugen von der Popularität der Frankfurter Urgesteine.

Und auch wenn der Titel des neuen Albums etwas anderes mutmaßen lässt, TANKARD klingen im 35ten Jahr keineswegs nach Ruhestand. Das neue Album sprüht vor Ideenreichtum, Frische und Aggressivität. Songs wie „Syrian Nightmare“, „Arena Of The True Lies“ oder der Titeltrack „One Foot In the Grave“ reihen sich nahtlos in die lange Reihe der Bandklassiker ein. Zudem lassen Gerre & Co. dieses Mal den Spass wortwörtlich beiseite und packen die gesellschaftskritische Keule aus. Selbst der traditionelle Bier-Song, „Secret Order 1516“ wurde mit Sozialkritik gewürzt. Fans des TANKARD–Typischen Humors kommen bei „Sole Grinder“ allerdings trotzdem auf ihre Kosten. Der Song ist eine Hommage an Bandmanager Buffo Schnädelbach (Gerre: »Deutschlands lustigster Choleriker«), natürlich mit einem gewohnten Augenzwinkern.

Erstmals aufgenommen in den Gernhard Studios in Troisdorf, verpasste Produzent Martin Buchwalter (DESTRUCTION, SUIDAKRA) dem Album einen frischen und druckvollen Sound. Der Bass rockt, das Schlagzeug hämmert und Gerre’s Stimme klingt energiegeladener und wütender als je zuvor. Zudem packt Gitarrist Andi Gutjahr Riffs und Solis aus, die man von TANKARD in dieser Form wohl noch nie gehört hat. Das vielschichtige Album steckt voller Überraschungen und wird nicht nur Fans der Band zu begeistern wissen.

Auch wenn sich im Laufe der letzten drei Dekaden vieles geändert hat, eines ist noch genau wie am Anfang: TANKARD sind vier Metal-Maniacs aus Frankfurt. Authentisch, laut und manchmal betrunken. Und daran wird sich auch in den nächsten 35 Jahren nichts ändern!

“A Tour For The Demented 2019”

Since 1989, Canada’s ANNIHILATOR have not stopped putting out records and touring the world. Despite the ever-changing climate of the Metal World (and releasing a series of “different” Metal records with various lineups along the way), Jeff Waters and company have consistently delivered strong albums since the band’s debut “Alice In Hell”. Then there was 1990’s best-selling “Never, Neverland”, 1995’s “King of The Kill”, “Schizo Deluxe” in 2005 and many other critically-acclaimed releases up until 2015’s “Suicide Society.” The ‘under-the-radar’ influence of this band, and writer/guitarist/vocalist Jeff Waters, has been felt throughout the entire realm of the metal world by a ton of well-known musicians and bands; that influence even stretching into the hard rock and instrumentalist genre.

ANNIHILATOR’s main man Jeff Waters, in his usual humble manner, offers this in response: “ANNIHILATOR’s music has been influenced by a good hundred of my favorite bands and musicians; you can hear their contributions to what I have been doing all throughout ANNIHILATOR’s catalogue. It’s a bonus and an honor when bands and musicians I love mention that I had something to do with their playing or songs!”

Which all leads to the fact that ANNIHILATOR’S 16th studio release, “For The Demented”, is certainly their most complete and definitive statement yet.

“It was time to analyze what a lot of fans over the years have kept telling me,” says Waters. “It was time to sit down and figure out “why” ANNIHILATOR’s early “thrash-meets-melodic” caught the ears of so many AND to try to sweep the “fan” part of my writing/playing/singing out the door and welcome back the mostly-original Waters writing that was to be the first four ANNIHILATOR albums.”

Waters didn’t venture back alone, while looking back through ANNIHILATOR’S history. “I was well aware that trying to re-capture the past usually fails, or at least won’t come close. So I decided to bring in fresh ears, both musically and physically with Rich Hinks, my bassist for the last few years. And doing most all of the records by myself, including writing and playing most all on my own, as well as mixing, mastering, engineering, etc…, well it can become routine and can often hinder you from being objective and more creative.
Rich came in and co-wrote the music with me, as well as co-produced the beginning stages of the record. His background of classic thrash metal meets a newer “math” metal style was the perfect combination for me to simply ask, “What do you think of this?” He would most-often reply with “not the ANNIHILATOR style I like”, so we would keep going until we both felt that core ANNIHILATOR riffing and writing style presented itself.

“Bottom line, “For The Demented” captures some feel from ANNIHILATOR’s 1985-87 demos mixed with the first 4 ANNIHILATOR records. Back to the thrash meets melody but with some pure Waters guitar riffing, up-graded lead guitar shredding and vocals back to the demo-days meets the “King of The Kill” record.
Lyrically, I placed a theme on the record: the human mind and all of its glory, complexity, diversity, weaknesses and insanity! Pretty much the craziness of the music is matched by the lyrics.”

I remember the first time I saw Sacred Reich, at The Marquee in London in 1989. The first thing that struck me was that the queue was around the block. I guess I wasn’t alone in my admiration for the band. Once inside the excitement was palpable, there was an air of anticipation.. As the band slammed into the opening song the room exploded. Bodies were flying over the top of the barricade. An enormous pit broke out. People were jumping up and down and singing along at the top of their lungs. This was something to behold. Sacred Reich whipped everyone in the sold out room into a frenzy and never let up. They pounded us with “Ignorance”, “One Nation”, and a blistering cover of Sabbath’s “War Pigs”. As the final strains of the encore “Surf Nicaragua” rang in my ears Sacred Reich triumphantly left the stage and left us to pick up the pieces. We were all blown away.

Fast forward six months to the Dynamo Open Air in Eindhoven Holland. Sacred Reich has really hit their stride. From the moment they hit the stage and dive into “Surf Nicaragua” the crowd is with them. Just as the Marquee show six months earlier bodies fly over the top, an enormous pit erupts in the middle of the crowd, and it seems everyone knows all of the words to every song. This time the crowd is 25,000 strong!

Sacred Reich would go on to tour the world with Pantera, Sepultura, and Danzig to name a few, and release more great records but I will never forget “Surf Nicaragua” and those six months in 1989. You really felt like you were part of something. The big four Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax had become big stars, leading the way, yet somewhat removed from the grass roots of the scene they put on the map. Sacred Reich still felt like “our” band. The mix of the pounding drums of Greg Hall, the power chord acrobatics of rhythm guitarist Jason Rainey, Wiley Arnett’s incredibly tasty solos, and the unique vocals and provocative lyrics of bassist/singer Phil Rind was something real, something we could relate to. I followed the band throughout their career from “Ignorance” a blast of sheer force and in your face thrash, “Surf Nicaragua” possibly the greatest Metal EP ever, “The American Way” a musical and lyrical tour de force, “Independent” with new drummer Dave McClain (Machine Head) and a honed and polished sound and their last studio album “Heal” still heavy enough to kill your neighbors lawn.
Put on those records today and they stand the test of time, musically and lyrically. I guess the more things change the more they stay the same.

It’s been twenty years since Sacred Reich released their debut record Ignorance (yes they were actually records on vinyl); and eighteen years since those memorable shows in London and Eindhoven. My hair has become a little bit thinner while my body has gone the opposite direction. Very recently I have received a bit of good news. In the summer of 2007 Metal Blade Records will be re-issuing Ignorance and Surf Nicaragua together on two discs with some unreleased tracks and a DVD including footage of that famous Dynamo gig in 1989. And to add to my excitement the original lineup will be getting back together to do some shows in Europe.
They will be playing some of my old stomping grounds London, Eindhoven, Belgium, and an appearance at Wacken Open Air!

Thank you lads for getting back at it. I’m getting ready for people flying over the top, huge pits, and everyone singing at the top of their lungs! That’s how I remember it. I’ll be sure to get out the old neck brace!
